Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
I may never have read a novel that is closer to perfection than Middlesex. This is my favorite read of 2011 so far, and is one of my favorite books in my history of book reading. Eugenides crafts a moving and gorgeous portrait of a Greek family through three generations, as told from the perspective of Cal, the product of the generations that came before, and a hermaphrodite. Cal is one of the most endearing narrators I have ever encountered; the majority of the characters in the novel were endearing to me as well, because they were real to me. My favorite storyline was that of Cal’s grandparents, Lefty and Desdemona. Their story leads off the novel, and manages to stick with the reader to the end, despite the cast of characters we meet after them.
My only regret is not reading this novel sooner; I’d seen it being read for years by people on buses, airplanes…wherever there was transportation, there was almost certainly someone readingMiddlesex. I can’t recommend it highly enough, and will be one of the books at the top of my list when people ask for an amazing book to read.
