I REALLY, REALLY want the Untitled J.J. Abrams Married Mr. and Mrs. Smith-esque Spy Project to be about them. (Seriously guys, first-gen spies are a million times more compelling than Syd/Vaughn — true story.) Alas, it will never happen; but the potential for that show would be AMAZING.

It’d be the darkest, twistiest, craziest show ever AND IT WOULD BE AMAZING.

Of Bees and Mist: A Novel by Erick Setiawan

Although I found this book to be utterly depressing, I also found it very beautiful.

This novel chronicles the life of Meridia, a little girl born into an unusual household, who marries into an unusual family, and then starts an unusual family of her own. And I don’t mean unusual in a quirky way: I mean unusual in a fantastical, unbelievable, and dangerous way. In her childhood home, her mother forgets things in a moment, her father is whisked off in a mist every evening and returned by a different mist in the morning, the staircase lengthens and shortens at will, and ghosts appear in mirrors.

Her husband’s family is ruled by a mother with control issues and the ability to attack people with bees when she is angered. And that’s not the worst that she can do…but I won’t spoil the plot for future readers.

Setiawan has written a novel with echoes of nineteenth century gothic tales, infused it with elements of fantasy, and placed the story in a more current setting. It’s a wonderful read, despite the terrible things that happen to the characters, and unlike anything else I’ve ever read. I’ll definitely read Setiawan’s next novel.
